When I saw the headline I thought it was historical. Turns out it’s referring to an article in an Australian newspaper from Victoria.
A Victorian gun shop owner was encouraging lovers to show their affection by buying their other half a firearm for Valentine’s Day.
Swan Hill Fishing and Shooting Supplies owner Bec said the newspaper ad was meant to be a bit of fun, and not intended to incite violence. But naturally it drew the bead of attention from the anti-gun folks.
“People need to lighten up,” she said, adding one man had already been in the store that day to buy his wife a Valentine’s Day shotgun.
The Australians have a love-hate relationship with firearms and their ownership regulations are stricter than in the USA. Following a hostage situation in a Lindt chocolate café located at Martin Place in Sydney where two hostages died, Australian Senator David Leyonhjelm labelled Australia a country of “disarmed victims”.
I added the Valentine’s photo because it’s funny. And because that’s my kind of gift.
